What is Genre?

What is GENRE?

Genre means 'type' or 'category', these are used as a way to categorise different products that share similar features or characteristics.
  • This helps us quickly establish differences or indifferences between different media forms.
  • To establish certain codes and conventions that film makers can follow in order to make the product look a certain way.
  • To establish certain expectations.
  • Help audiences develop personal tastes around genre and consumption.
For example:
This poster of the hit horror movie Sinister was purposely made by the producers to induce a sense of fear thus giving the movie a genre. They did this through the careful use of font, bloody pictures and small children acting abnormally; giving the consumer an idea of what the movie is about.
One genre trope in this movie is abnormal or evil children: a cliche in today's modern horror movie.
